Rain is a Wonderful Thing

Things are dry; there's no doubt about that. After little snowfall I knew that rain barrels were a requirement this year, and I got one installed just before the rain!

This barrel holds about 50 gallons of water when full. The water isn't potable, meaning not safe for you and I to drink, but perfect for the garden and pots around our home. Having a water store like this also reduces your home water usage. While collecting rainwater is legal in the US, some states have restrictions and regulations.  Thankfully, the city of Omaha has no restrictions and encourages the use of rain barrels, as long as they are properly maintained.

Whenever we have standing water, the first concern is moquitos. I certainly don't want to be eaten alive while I garden! The water features keep water flowing and moving through solar pumps to discourage them, but the rain barrels rely on a mesh barrier to keep them out.

I look forward to using this water during the summer months 💜
